Karen Cadiero-Kaplan will be the speaker for Textesoliv Regional Conference October 30, 2010, at the University of Houston Hilton Hotel.  Dr. Cadiero-Kaplan is well known for her research in how literacy processes are utilized, developed, and integrated into the classroom.

Karen Cadiero-Kaplan is a Professor of Education at San Diego State University and is Chair of the Department of Policy Studies in Language and Cross Cultural Education.

 Dr. Cadiero-Kaplan has a range of publications concerned with the role of education and language policies in curriculum development and teacher’s professional development. Her overriding concern is how literacy processes are utilized, developed, and integrated into classroom practice, teacher development, school curriculum and policy. And further, how these processes are influenced by political ideologies. This concept was first highlighted in her book, The Literacy Curriculum & Bilingual Education: A Critical Examination. Since this significant publication, she was invited to be lead editor to a volume of teacher research projects promoting educational excellence and social justice titled: The Living Work of Teachers: Ideology & Practice, with the goal to provide classroom teachers with grounded theoretical research models that explicitly highlight the politics of education for diverse communities in our country. Her research in issues of politics and education are further reflected in recent journal publications including:. The Preparation of Highly Qualified Teachers for English Learners: Educational Responsiveness for Unmet Needs in the Journal of Equity & Excellence in Education and CCTC and the Process for Reauthorization of Bilingual Teacher Preparation Standards: A Critical-Historical Perspective, appearing in the Journal of the Association of Mexican American Educators.

In addition to research, she provides state and national leadership in the area of English language teaching and language policy by serving as President (2006-07) for the California Association of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (CATESOL), Past Vice-President (2007-09) of the CATESOL Education Foundation. Presently, she serves as Vice President of Californians Together and Incoming Chair of the TESOL Affiliate Leadership Council.
